Gridovation

Overview

As technology advances, it takes more energy to power our homes, fuel our industries and generate economic prosperity. Georgia Transmission’s Gridovation is a historic investment in energy infrastructure to ensure Georgia communities like yours have access to resilient, cost-effective power you can rely on today, tomorrow and beyond.

Benefits of Transmission Line and Substation Projects

Rising to Tomorrow's Needs

The Gridovation investments in Georgia’s transmission lines and substations will connect the state’s communities to a new, diverse energy mix.

New technologies like battery storage, local microgrids and new grid control systems will make power in your community more reliable and resilient.

Reliability and Resilience

Expanding high-voltage transmission lines, upgrading substations and investing in new technology helps energy flow more efficiently for enhanced grid stability and reduced downtime.

Powering Opportunity

More than 4.5 million Georgians across 70% of our state—including many rural communities—can look forward to fewer and shorter life-disrupting outages and reduced energy costs.

Who is Georgia Transmission?

Georgia Transmission is a not-for-profit transmission-only electric cooperative owned by 38 of Georgia’s Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs). We plan, build and maintain the high-voltage electrical infrastructure that delivers power to our state's EMCs, providing electricity to more than 4.4 million Georgians.

Together with Georgia Power, Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) and Dalton Utilities, we plan and operate Georgia's electric transmission system through the Integrated Transmission System (ITS), ensuring transmission remains efficient and reliable.

Why Gridovation?

With a diverse energy mix and well-maintained transmission systems, Georgia’s energy grid has a strong track record of reliability and resilience. Our Gridovation investments will ensure Georgia’s EMCs can continue to meet these high standards as our state’s population and energy needs grow.

Georgia’s EMCs were founded to ensure rural Georgia could access a new era of opportunity through electric power. Georgia Transmission’s Gridovation investment is helping our EMCs deliver on that promise again for a brighter tomorrow.

What will be the impact of Gridovation in Georgia?

  • Improved grid for 70% of Georgia’s landmass
  • Increased reliability for 151 of Georgia’s 159 counties

How is Georgia Transmission choosing where to make upgrades?

We are intentional and thoughtful in the work we do to plan, build and maintain the state’s electric grid.

When it comes to establishing the need for new transmission lines and substation projects, we work with our members to meet the unique needs of their communities.

How long will the improvements take?

Georgia Transmission’s Gridovation investment includes multiple projects that will take place over a 10-year period, ending in 2035.

How will you site new transmission lines?

When the need for a transmission line or substation project has been identified, Georgia Transmission follows a robust and intentional siting process that considers the community as well as the engineering.

We put boots on the ground to study environmental and historic conditions, while gathering input from the community to make a thoughtful decision that addresses energy needs in the community while minimizing overall impact.

Will there be opportunities for the public to learn more about the proposed electric transmission project in their county?

Public participation is an important part of Georgia Transmission’s siting process for electric transmission projects.

Georgia Transmission expects to hold public meetings in each county any proposed transmission line or substation crosses. This is an opportunity to provide more information to communities and answer specific questions.

Affected property owners will be notified of the public meetings by certified mail. The meetings will also be advertised in each county's paper, as well as shared online.

How is the Gridovation investment being funded?

As a not-for-profit owned by and serving Georgia’s 38 EMCs, Georgia Transmission is eligible for certain low-cost financing options, federal loans and grant programs, which allow us to invest in our grid while continuing to deliver cost-effective service to our members.

Any grid investments we make have been carefully evaluated and determined to be essential.
